Our Big Break: Success Through Innovation

We’re often asked, “What is a Pocket Nurse®?”
Pocket Nurse began with a single product. In 1992, Anthony Battaglia, MS, BSN, RN began selling a plastic pocket organizer that included a pair of gold plated-bandage scissors, hemostat, penlight, and nameplate. It was called the Pocket Nurse, and it was Anthony’s big break.
The Pocket Nurse was a financial success, but Anthony had ambitions to help nurse educators in their instructional efforts. Knowing the relevance of education in maintaining healthcare standards, Anthony re-examined his experiences in nursing school.
The result was twofold:
First, Anthony developed simulation tools for medication administration lessons. Prior to Pocket Nurse’s Inject-Ed™, educators purchased oranges for students to practice administering shots. Although a safe option, oranges lack much similarity to human flesh.
Second, Anthony developed an extensive solution to combat use of expired medications in the classroom. The Demo Dose® line of simulated medications allowed for a safer learning environment.
From humble beginnings, Pocket Nurse has grown from one product to over 7,500. What once was a lone office housing a pocket organizer sales operation in 1992 has moved to Monaca, PA and expanded to include a full office building and distribution center.
Pocket Nurse’s transition into simulation manufacturing and distribution is a proud achievement of ours as it served as both our big break and a lasting change to healthcare education.
